An authenticator app is a mobile application that provides an additional layer of security for online accounts. It generates time-based one-time passwords (TOTP) or uses the HMAC-based One-Time Password (HOTP) algorithm to create unique codes that are used for two-factor authentication (2FA).
When enabled, the authenticator app is linked to your online accounts, such as email, social media, or financial platforms. During the login process, in addition to entering your username and password, you will be prompted to provide a verification code generated by the authenticator app.
The app usually works offline and generates a new code every 30 seconds or so. Since the code is time-based and changes frequently, it adds an extra layer of security to protect your accounts from unauthorized access.
Some popular authenticator apps include Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, LastPass Authenticator, and Duo Mobile. These apps can be downloaded from the respective app stores for iOS and Android devices.
To set up Google Authenticator, follow these steps:
1. Install the Google Authenticator app on your smartphone or tablet. It's available for both iOS and Android devices and can be downloaded from the respective app stores.
2. Open the Google Authenticator app.
3. On the website or service you want to enable two-factor authentication (2FA), go to your account settings or security settings. Look for an option related to "Two-Factor Authentication," "2FA," or "Authentication App."
4. Select the option to set up 2FA using an authenticator app. This will typically involve scanning a QR code or entering a secret key provided by the website or service.
5. In the Google Authenticator app, tap the "+" or "Add" button to add a new account.
6. Choose the option to scan a QR code or enter a provided key manually.
- If scanning a QR code, align your phone's camera with the QR code displayed on the website or service. The app will capture the code automatically and configure the account.
- If entering a key manually, type in the account name and the secret key provided by the website or service.
7. Once the account is added, the Google Authenticator app will display a time-based one-time password (TOTP) for that account. This code changes every 30 seconds.
8. Go back to the website or service and enter the verification code displayed on the Google Authenticator app into the corresponding field.
9. Complete the setup process on the website or service according to their instructions.
10. From now on, when you log in to the website or service, you will be prompted to enter the verification code generated by the Google Authenticator app along with your username and password.
Repeat these steps for each website or service where you want to enable Google Authenticator for two-factor authentication. Make sure to securely store backup codes or set up alternative recovery methods provided by the website or service in case you lose access to your authenticator app or device.
Remember to keep your smartphone or tablet secure since it contains the Google Authenticator app, which is crucial for accessing your accounts with 2FA enabled.
